    Summer '09 Stick Trip

Mini background and a few facts about Team Stick..

    * There are five of us.
    * We met in college in the summer of 1999 as members of the UW Running Club.
    * We took a Marathon Training PE course together the winter/spring of 2000.
    * "Team Stick" was a term used by our running coach to describe the Kenyans...we decided to "borrow" it.
    * We have remained close friends despite living far away (midwest and both coasts!)
    * We usually plan a trip together in the summer and sometimes over the holidays.
    * Inbetween these trips, we often schedule races, weekends, visits, etc with as many sticks as possible!
    * Saying Team Stick is the best is a tremendous understatement--these ladies have taught me so much about running, friendship, and life over the past ten years! I am so lucky to have met them ;) Here are just a few examples: 5K PR, past summer trip, race, nyc '08, past spring trip... there are so many more!! those provide a mere glimpse.
    * Our most recent trip was this past weekend...

Thursday was a day of travel for me. I met two of the midwest Sticks in the afternoon and we headed up to Minneapolis, the location of this year's summer trip. Obviously, the trip included much more than just running, but as usual, I will only highlight the running and running related stories in my blog.

    * Friday morning was our first run together. We did a 5.5 mile loop around Cedar Lake. The run included nice scenery and awesome conversation!

    * Saturday morning, the 4th, we participated in a Firecracker 10K race. C is sometimes my running buddy during these types of races, and we were able to run together the whole time. My official time was 52:59 (~8:31 pace) which I was more than satisfied with. It was a bit rainy and humid, and efforts were made to keep a solid pace. Other members of Team Stick placed in the top 16 overall--speedies! (Pic = Me and C with matching strides)

    * To accommodate our various training plans, we all ran a bit extra at the end. I did about two and a half as a cool down, but others did as much as 8 or 9 extra miles!

    * Sunday we split up to either bike or run. While the cyclists were logging about 30 miles, I went on an easy run with two other sticks along a Greenway. We stuck to a recovery pace and just chatted away. Abs followed, as well as push-ups and a series of random calisthenics--all with plenty of giggling and silliness between sets ;)

    * Monday morning I headed out on a fun little four miler with L in Madison--we lazily circled roads and paths in the arboretum. Again, this was a nice recovery run.

    * I'd say the hammie is about 92% healed. It feels better and better each day.
