What to Wear

After the Hot Chocolate 15K, I fell ill. It was just a cold, but "just a cold" takes on a whole new meaning when you're a mom. Luckily, my parents came to my rescue (once again!) and I was able to sneak in a few naps for faster recovery. But the whole sick thing really threw a wrench into my mileage last week. The weather was also a culprit, convincing me to do most of my running indoors.

Tuesday I was feeling a little better and decided to employ the old "run it out" strategy in hopes that my cold would disappear. I even threw in a few 800's - the treadmill can be boring (very boring) and it helps to have distractions even if they are disguised as speedwork. In the end, I ran 6 miles with 4 x 800 @ 8:45 pace. And I did feel better! (Though I believe my mom's chicken soup and her baby coverage is what really did the trick.)

Wednesday was my yoga day for strength session number one. It was decent, though I have yet to find an "on demand" yoga class that I really like. I really miss the yoga studio I used to go to in ny - but this will have to do for now.

Thursday I was in no mood to run, but I headed down to the treadmill anyway. My plan was just to start running and go from there. Sometimes this is the best way to combat a (huge) lack of motivation. As soon as I started running, I knew it would be short. But I didn't want just two miles, and by three miles I convinced myself I could get to four. So four is what I got.

The weekend was more or less a bust. I was under some impression that I could go out both nights and not suffer consequences (ie. a baby who likes to wake up in the sixes regardless of the fact that it's the (freakin') weekend!). So I was basically a zombie during the day and kicking myself that I had chosen a social life over sleep (and running). I skipped Saturday's planned run completely and was going to do the same with Sunday. But my husband persuaded me to head out for a few miles; it was 70 degrees and sunny..and November..in Chicago. This is not something you mess with. Out the door I went in shorts and a tee and six miles later I came back in much better spirits.

My second strength session of the week included lifting - mostly upper body and abs, but also some hamstring work. I'm happy to report that the free weigh work seems to be getting easier ;)

This week started off with a 3.5 mile run yesterday with Baby. It was about 50 degrees with overcast skies, but the wind was mild and the sun was making every effort to peek through the clouds. I think Baby is pretty comfortable in there, but I never know for sure if she is too warm from the bundling or if she is cold. She seems content but she is also very easy going. I wonder if there is a "what to wear" page for babies in baby joggers, like there is "what to wear for runners."  It would be very helpful.

Wow 70 degrees! The weather in NYC has been so warm too but not that hot. The only downside is they already turned on the heat in my apartment and it is absolutely miserably hot! Still can't really complain...

I used to wonder about Norah's comfort temp when she was a baby too -- they're just sitting in their, so it's hard to compare your tempt to theirs. After awhile, you learn that they'll let you know when they're uncomfortable.

Do you have a weathershield for the jogger? It is helpful for inclement weather. Blocking the breeze will definitely keep her warmer and she won't have to be bundled to the hilt! I have read of some moms who warm up a water bottle and stick it in there, with the weathershield covering the stroller, during the winter in order to keep kiddos warm and toasty. Seems to work. Their kids aren't popscicles...as far as I know.

Nice job pushing yourself to crank out 4 miles on the treadie even when you weren't feeling it! It's amazing how much it helps to just put on your shoes and start running when you're lacking in motivation. Also so nice that your parents are around to help out when your sick! Being sick when you're supposed to be taking care of baby is the worst!

I love how hard you push yourself to continue to work out. I find it amazing that you do so much with a baby. It helps to convince me that I can keep working out even after I have a child. Thanks for the inspiration!

Nice job on your running week! I always try to sweat out a cold as well and find that it does help :)
